Kenya consistently experiences intense and challenging general elections. The periods before and after elections are particularly sensitive and require caution. Unfortunately, these times are often marked by violence, intimidation, injuries, and sometimes even loss of life. Politicians frequently exploit the largely poor population, many of whom suffer from unemployment. After receiving small handouts, some youths become eager to confront political opponents aggressively. This cycle has persisted for years, reaching a tragic peak during the 2007/2008 post-election violence, which resulted in significant loss of life and property. Although the elections in 2017 and 2022 were also tense, their impact did not reach the devastating levels seen in 2007.

The areas most affected are often informal settlements where poverty is severe, and young people are easily drawn into violence over small handouts. We have consistently been at the forefront of addressing this issue through art, especially as we approach the general elections next year. Unfortunately, the current political climate is troubling. The rhetoric and behavior of our politicians have been filled with negativity, creating a bleak outlook for the future.

As I mentioned earlier, in our previous efforts to support our community, we have been using various forms of artโ€”poetry, music, and filmโ€”to share positive messages with our youth. One of our initiatives, called MovieKibandaTour, involves visiting informal movie theaters in informal settlements. These spaces are ideal for reaching young people, who often spend their time here watching football. MovieKibanda provides a great opportunity to engage and connect with our community members.

The following poetry projects, created together with our partner in 2017 and 2022 respectively, continue to resonate deeply and carry the same powerful message.

It’s amazing to see such positive initiatives that aimed towards young people. Hoping that Kibanda Project is also pushing the youth to register as voters
