It’s not news that many artists come from humble backgrounds, though not all do. Some artists come from wealth yet remain incredibly talented, and we cannot deny that. However, my main focus today is on those coming from the ghetto, for lack of a better term.
Our goal has always been to use art to uplift members of our community. Art also serves as an escape route, helping young people overcome the societal challenges often faced in the ghetto. For them, art is not only a source of income but also a source of joy and happiness.
I have been involved in art for most of my life, collaborating with incredible artists, instrumentalists, singers, rappers, actors, poets, and many others. When I began my music career, I met some exceptionally talented individuals with whom I performed at various events before taking a break from performing.
These gentlemen are Diba and Anariko. Diba is a gifted musician and outstanding drummer, widely recognized in the Kenyan live music scene. Anariko is a skilled multi-instrumentalist, producer, song arranger, and live performer.
Recently, they invited me to witness the realization of a dream they have been working on for some time; a rehearsal and production studio. I spent the better part of the day with them.

Diba
During my sit-down with Diba, I ordered my favorite meal—chapati and madondo while Diba chose ugali with matumbo, which we enjoyed with hot milk tea. Diba shared with me why he felt it was time to set up a studio for young people not only from Eastlands but from all over Nairobi.
He spoke about the challenges he faced as a young musician and his desire to make the path easier for others. Having known him for a long time and collaborated with him in music, I had no reason to doubt him. One thing I truly admired about him was his teamwork motto.

The Clan
The CLAN is a passionate group of art enthusiasts including singers, instrumentalists, rappers, poets, and more. After investing all his resources, he teamed up with Anariko, his trusted musical partner, and together they founded CLAN. The concept, developed by Diba with support from Anariko, is based in Kariobangi. They lead the collective and collaborate with a diverse range of artists, all united by a shared vision.

Nyatiti stories
Diba also shared his projects aimed at bridging traditional music with contemporary urban sounds, encouraging the younger generation to appreciate and embrace our true musical roots. His vision includes documenting Kenyan drums and expanding this work beyond Kenya to encompass the wider African continent.
During the rehearsals, they were joined by the legendary Nyatiti player Ogweno, one of the few remaining masters from the older generation. These are just some of the inspiring projects he is leading.

Partnesrship
The Kibanda Project has showed them how we can support and uplift our community through collaboration with them. They are also open to partnerships with various individuals and organizations to promote the well-being and development of our community.
