We Inspire Change Through Film, Media & Tech

Kibanda Project works to ensure communities from Nairobi’s informal settlements are seen, heard, and represented accurately. We achieve this by developing the skills, platforms, and systems that enable people to share their own stories with dignity and credibility.

Our work sits at the intersection of community engagement, storytelling, journalism, and digital empowerment, with a strong emphasis on ethical documentation and community ownership.

Community-Led Storytelling and Documentation

We support communities to document their lived realities in ways that reflect truth, nuance, and local context.

Through participatory storytelling approaches, we work with residents, artists, and youth to capture everyday experiences, social challenges, and community-led solutions. This includes written stories, video, photography, poetry, and dialogue-based formats that prioritise local voices over external interpretations.

Our approach ensures that communities are not reduced to narratives of deficit, but presented as complex, resilient, and knowledgeable.

Youth Mentorship and Skills Development

We invest in young people as storytellers, journalists, and community leaders.

Kibanda Project provides mentorship and hands-on training in storytelling, media production, journalism fundamentals, fact-checking, and digital literacy. Young participants learn not only technical skills, but also ethical practices, critical thinking, and responsible storytelling, equipping them to engage meaningfully in civic and media spaces.

Media Literacy and Ethical Storytelling

We strengthen community understanding of how media works and how it can be used responsibly.

Our media literacy work helps communities identify misinformation, understand verification processes, and engage critically with digital content. Drawing from training with CNN Academy and WITNESS.org, we embed principles of visual verification, open-source investigation (OSINT), consent, and safety into all our documentation and training activities.
