Who We Are
Kibanda Project CBO was founded in 2017 in response to the persistent underrepresentation and misrepresentation of voices from Nairobi’s informal settlements. Rooted in lived experience, the organization emerged from a desire to reclaim storytelling as a tool for dignity, accountability, and community-led change.
Our Beginnings
The initiative began by working closely with local poets and creative artists, recognizing art as a powerful language for communities often excluded from formal platforms. Our first project, MovieKibanda, toured informal movie theatres frequented by youth, using film, poetry, and dialogue to spark conversations around social justice, identity, and lived realities within informal settlements.
As the Kibanda Project grew, its mission expanded from creative expression to practical empowerment and media ownership. This evolution led to the establishment of Chambua KE TV, a community-driven digital media platform that later scaled into an online TV station.
Chambua KE TV focuses on grassroots storytelling, community debates, and investigative narratives that challenge harmful stereotypes while amplifying local voices.
Focus On Credible and Ethical Storytelling
To strengthen the quality, ethics, and credibility of our storytelling, the organization has benefited from advanced training and global networks. Through CNN Academy, our work has been shaped by professional training in journalism, digital storytelling, investigative reporting, and fact-checking.
In addition, a year-long fellowship with WITNESS.org has deepened our capacity in visual verification, open-source investigations (OSINT), and ethical documentation—ensuring that community stories are not only powerful, but verifiable and safe.
Today, Kibanda Project operates at the intersection of community engagement, creative storytelling, journalism, and digital empowerment. We focus on strengthening local leadership, mentoring youth, building media literacy, and supporting community-driven solutions to social, environmental, and economic challenges. Guided by trust, collaboration, and accountability, our work seeks to ensure that communities are not just subjects of stories but active authors of their own narratives.
